I’ve never turned this much air on a project before. It was very complication to keep vibrations and chatter down, but with sharp tools and light cuts I was able to get it done. I’m proud to say I was injury free while working on this. Maple Burl 18”x7”x2”.

Three legged burr bowl

This burr was mounted on the lathe by first creating a temporary base made from plywood, that was then screwed to the bottom of the burr with 3 screws, the bowl was then turned. After turning the bowl was sanded to 240 grit then a coat of Yorkshire grit followed by 3 coats of carnuba wax. After removing from the lathe, the temporary base was removed and the screw holes drilled out to 10mm diameter. Then 3 legs were turned from spalted sycamore and secured in the holes with superglue.

A natural edge bowl made from a cherry tree cut down from our own garden. The wood was stored and allowed to dry for 12 months before being turned. After turning the bowl was sanded up to 1200 grit then sanding sealer applied all over followed by 3 coats of friction polish over the turned surfaces.

Cherry Natural Edge Footed Bowl

This cherry bowl was turned natural edge with the bark exposed on the rim. Four feet were carved to lift and elevate the piece. The wood was dyed with red Artisan alcohol dye and finished with wipe-on Minwax Antique Oil finish.

Finish is everything. If the finish is not good it can ruin the whole project. Many times it takes as long to finish a project as it does to turn it.

I generally sand as much as I can while the project is on the lathe and then hand sand the finishing touches.

Inlayng TURQUOISE and COPPER in the natural cracks and voids is the last thing I do before putting the final sanding touches on.

For my finish I use General Finishes ARM-R-SEAL clear and ARM-R-SEAL gloss topcoat. I use a foam brush to apply several coats of the sealer but spray the final coats on. This gives it a real smooth looking finish and brings out the natural look of the wood. It also highlights the decorative materials that I use. I have always liked the gloss finish the best.
