Rosewood Whimsy

This whimsical piece was one 2x2x24 inch piece of rosewood - and I wanted to try something different with it!

I used my bandsaw to texture the portion that wasn’t turned. The turned portion received 3 coats of EnduroVar, with a light 600 grit sanding between coats. The third coat was sanded to 12000 grit with MicroMesh before a carnauba wax buff. The contrast is pretty striking. About 9” tall overall, the turned stem is 5”, and the goblet is 4”. Those numbers are reversed for the textured parts.

On a side note, I took this piece with me to the Woodturner’s Symposium in Portland and displayed it in the instant gallery. Of the hundreds of works displayed, this was one of 24 to be chosen to be critiqued on the final day! The panel of judges only had positive reactions!!

Changing Gears

“Changing Gears” Based on an Armillary Sundial but with a Steampunk twist.

This piece stands 18” high, 15” wide. It’s made of Maple burl (rescued from a friend's scrap bin) with the natural edges to provide texture, Cherry and a really stubborn piece of old Red Oak. Blued steel “rivets” and three small glass “jewels”. Embellished with pyrography, a touch of acrylic paint and finished in satin lacquer.

The center ring has two faces. One embellished with gears the flip side shows the natural inclusions of the Maple it was made from.

Both the outer ring and inner gear turn on the arrow so they can be repositioned.

Wheel Of Delicacy (Mahogany Garden)

Wheel of Delicacy #4 Mahogany Garden This is my fourth one in my series and i think they are evolving nicely. Honduran mahogany Many hours went into this piece with the turning ,piercing ,the burning , and the coloring. I had also made a extension for a tiny burr that i could use to reach inside the piece to allow me to clean up some of the glue that drip on the joint , it worked like a charm but a bit stressful reaching through the webbing of the piercing , thankfully it all went ok and me and the piece survived. Honduran Mahogany tung oil , piercing wood burning , acryllic paints and faber castel ink for the embellishments. 10" in diameter with a 5.750" inside diameter and 3.750" wide.

Wheel Of Delicacy (Unity)

Wheel Of Delicacy #6 Unity

This is the latest in my series of wheels, i wanted to push the boundaries a little and take my wheels a step further. This one was tons of work and I'm glad to be done and start on another. The wood is kiln dried cherry for both wheels the silver wheel was painted with general finishes Argentine pearl ,and the other was stained with Georgian cherry gel stain , the design was then burned on both wheels and then i did the piercing , and last was coloring the flowers. The paint for the flowers was water based. Both wheels measure 11.250" in diameter. And have an inside diameter of 5 " and they are 3.500" wide. Many many hours were involved so im hoping everyone enjoys it just as much as me.

A Mesquite Burl Bowl with Turquoise Inlay

Finish is everything. If the finish is not good it can ruin the whole project. Many times it takes as long to finish a project as it does to turn it.

I generally sand as much as I can while the project is on the lathe and then hand sand the finishing touches.

Inlayng TURQUOISE and COPPER in the natural cracks and voids is the last thing I do before putting the final sanding touches on.

For my finish I use General Finishes ARM-R-SEAL clear and ARM-R-SEAL gloss topcoat. I use a foam brush to apply several coats of the sealer but spray the final coats on. This gives it a real smooth looking finish and brings out the natural look of the wood. It also highlights the decorative materials that I use. I have always liked the gloss finish the best.

Sweet Gum and Aluminum Sphere

This is a Sweetgum sphere that was cut apart and layered with aluminum sheet and then turned, leaving a surface with polished aluminum bands. The piece was finished with a clear acrylic.
