Carved Blanket Box

Material from humble beginnings now takes residency in my small new home. A basic frame and panel trunk to hold our cherrished family-made quilts and extra dog blankets. Each panel carved with a print makers gouge and accented with pyrography.

All the structural material was purchased from Menard's (home construction center). The panels were "Select" grade Pine, rails and styles "Standard" construction grade Pine -- precisely cut to yield straight grained sections. Bought on sale, true to my frugal nature. The lid (wormy Pine) and trim (Walnut) are something a little more desirable, by most standards. These pieces were pulled from a cabinet shop that was closing, given in exchange for helping the former owner load up the last of his tools as he left town.

Nothing but Arm-R-Seal over unadulterated wood. Simply put, 4 coat of finish followed up by a buff with paste wax gives the right amount of shine.

Lions share of the budget was spent on hinges (Van Dykes) and finish. Still revel in the fact that the ugliest construction material can find a use in 'finer' woodworking.

Checkboard Cutting Board

This cutting board was made from purpleheart, cherry and maple and finished with General Finishes Butcher Block Oil. It was made by my son when he was 9 years old 2 years ago. It is used daily and oiled about once every 6 months.

Old World Wardrobe

Everything of lasting quality is simple. For a Shaker inspired wardrobe I wanted this built as solid as a rock, looming as you enter the room. Sharp lines, deep wood tones, and a soft sheen were achieved beautifully on this piece. One wiped on coat of Medium Walnut Danish Oil for color, topped with four wiped on coats of General Finishes Arm-R-Seal in Satin did wonders.

For the panels & trim, I selected from the prized stack of Wisconsin harvested old-growth Pine. Salvaged from bleacher boards my high school pulled out, to be replaced with new plastic ones. The Red Elm rail-and-style material came to me in an exchange for labor. Harvested by an old arborist in Minnesota -- drying for decades before I was born, twisted and checked from exposure.

Keeping with the Shaker tradition, frame and panel construction suited the carcass well. Hundreds of individually bored holes for joints reinforced with loose tenons (dowel joints mainly). Finished with a basic crown and base to add a little depth. Only deviation from the old world style are the soft close hinges and drawer slides.

One of my longest running projects to date, done in the background of life and work and learning. Proud to finish this recently and happy to share.

Mahoganey, Walnut and Maple Mallet

I made a mahogany, maple and walnut mallet. The head is made of all three materials and the handle is only mahogany. I used a 35mm forstener bit to add steel ball bearings to both sides of the head for added weight. I then added chamfers to the head and the handle for style and grip. I used a 2-degree taper on the maple and the cut two slots in the handle. I then added 2 2-degree tapered wedges to fill the taper so the head does not fall off.

Farmhouse Coffee Table

This coffee table is inspired by the Ana White design that I made after returning from a military training event. It is assembled with a Kreg Jig for all but the X’s on each end. Which were glued and then securely clamped in place. It is finished with a dark walnut stain that I let sit for 10 minutes before wiping off the excess. I used clear polycrylic on the framing and X’s, then used an epoxy resin for the table top.

Grandy style Farmhouse Entertainment Center

This is a Grandy inspired farmhouse entertainment center that was altered in size by making 84” long rather than the original 91”. I used a Kreg Jig to assemble the frame and attach the top boards. I sanded up to 320 grit then began to add the finish. It is finished with a dark walnut stain, that I let sit for 10 minutes and then wiped the excess off. Then pure white paint was applied which helps to contrast the magnificent dark grains. I then applied the one fiat of poly on the entire piece, and an additional two to the stained parts. I sanded to 400 grit between each additional coat on the top and shelves.
