Bartering a Hutch Top

I recently completed a custom job for a client. She had an entertainment cabinet that was in two pieces. She wanted the bottom redone but no longer wanted the top. She asked if I would be interested in bartering the top. In return, I would give her a discount on her finished piece. Here in the country, it’s what we do, we barter. It’s not always veggies or eggs, it's furniture too!

One rainy night in Georgia, while lying in bed, my mind was in overdrive. I lay there thinking of ways I could transform the top into something that was useful and unique. Suddenly, at 3 a.m., I hopped out of bed and ran into the garage. The Hubs didn’t flinch, he was apparently use to my late-night rendezvous in the garage.

What was my idea? Flip her upside down! This would put the molding on the bottom of the piece, which seemed to make the overall look flow better.

The color I chose was Sage Garden by Behr. I decided to make my own chalk paint for this project (recipe here). I only mix one cup of paint at the time, because here in the South where the humidity is very high, the chalk paint does not store well. Also, be sure to use flat paint, not semi-gloss paint.

I gave the entire piece, including the inside, two coats of the chalk paint, allowing a 24-hour drying period between coats. I stained all the new wood shelving and the top with Minwax Dark Walnut.

Next, I used my Gator 120 grit sandpaper and distressed heavily, by hand.

A broken dresser was given new life with the help of an antique window. I removed the 4 drawers and used pieces of the wood left over from the drawers to make 3 shelves instead. I then attached an old window I had to the front of the dresser using hinges I had saved from another upcyled piece. Two colors of blue chalk paint were blended to complete the look.

Repurposed Secretary Hutch

This one-of-a-kind beauty was rebuilt from an 1800s hutch to a secretary desk that survived a tornado in the building it resided in (the base to it was destroyed). The entire hutch was rebuilt with a completely new base, backing, legs and shelves. The body has been painted in a gorgeous off-white color and distressed with a chipped paint look to accentuate all the incredible details. This bookshelf has three removable shelves, a gorgeous brown weathered wood backing and beautiful legs to support all the character contained in this one piece. It is ready to shine once again!

My husband’s great uncle had this card catalog box in his garage. It went from a library, to his garage, to my living room! I painted the box, lined the drawers and added feet to create this very unique piece. It was painted in Home Decor white chalk paint, finished with General Finishes High Performance Top Coat. The feet were purchased on Amazon.

A Pair of White Nights

I deconstructed a vintage vanity to create a pair of matching nightstands. I removed the mirror, support below and the tabletop area that joined the two pieces together. I filled in the holes on the sides that were left after removing the bolts with wood putty. I allowed the putty to dry and and sanded it smooth. I also needed to remove the veneer from the tops as it was lifting badly in several areas. I primed the pieces with BIN shellac, sprayed with a Wagner Flexio sprayer. I mixed equal parts of Antiqe White and Snow White Milk Paints and sprayed the pieces with my Wagner Flexio sprayer. I also added stencil detail to the sides of the drawers in the same color. The drawers are lined with a peel and stick wallpaper for a beautiful pop of color.

This kitchen table has been transformed into a bench to match the chairs. It's been painted in Antique White and Dark Chocolate Milk Paint. It's been sealed all over with High Performance Top Coat in Flat, and sprayed with a Fuji Spray professional sprayer for a smooth finish.

The best powder room ever!

I converted a vintage sewing machine into the sink and storge for our powder room. I had the sewing machine in storge for many years for just this purpose. The sewing machine was not with the cabinet. A copper sink was ordered through ebay. A plumber installed the plumbing. I took it to its current repurposing.

The top and drawer frames were painted with the paint black paint mix. The FM Ash was too dull for the pop I wanted. I made the mix so it was black but muted. I used the black paint, Royal Gold and Antique Copper paint in layers on the original drawer pulls, the wood appliques, the original raised wood embellisments, the front of the iron legs and stencils on the top.I also put the check paper in the bottom of the drawers. I put GF Java Gel Stain on all the wood surfaces which added a wonderful depth to the wood. The whole cabinet was sealed with four coats of Minwax Polycrylic. I sanded with a sanding sponge that had various grades of grit. There is a lovely mixed metal bee charm placed in the middle of wood applique which is glued on the spectacular decoupaged Courtly Check napkins from Mackenzie Childs. The check napkins are such fun I put them on the bottom surface of the drawers.The basket was placed on the foot pedal to hold 5 rolls of toilet paper.

The powder room is where I display a frog collection from years of collectiong and gifts. The round iron stand holds clean hand towels and the basket holds used towels. Each basket is marked as well as greeted by two of the many frogs in the room. There is a small mirror that is embellished with the metallic paint for our yourngest grandchildren and a faux copper mirror for the taller folks.

Sometimes I stand and look at the sewing machine/vanity and wonder what is going to happen if we move again!! It is so admired that I will just do it again.
