Cotton Candy Desk

I call this piece the Cotton Candy Desk. I call the dog Biscuit.

This finish was actually an accident. I tried using a crackle glaze on this desk and it didn't crackle, like at all. So I thought this piece was a loss. So I tried sanding off the glaze and this finish appeared. Talk about meant to be!

Shabby Chic Sofa Table

This table was originally a dark espresso color. I used white chalk paint to give it a fresh look but then distressed the piece to show the original color through. I then used touches of green patina gilding wax to add a few pops of teal details.

Lady Grace

I normally have an idea of what I want to achieve on a piece but I love it when a piece dictates to me! This is exactly what Lady Grace did! She was already a stately little lady but my vision for her was to turn her into a grand old dame!

She started out pretty rough, missing pieces of ornate details which I replaced. Each of the round bottom legs were missing some pieces, I used wood putty to form them to match the existing legs. I painted her with Sherwin Williams/ Totally Tan, adding splashes of colors like blue, reds and yellow next. I wanted these colors to be muted but give it an old world patina. I then used General Finish water based stain Antique Walnut, watered down then rubbed over each surface which allowed the color to deepen. To create patina in this fashion, it is layer upon layer of random tans, cremes, and dark brown glazing. The top was sanded and stained with General Finish Antique Walnut stain Lady Grace taught me to be more free in my expression of an Old World patina. As an artist, if I can learn from a piece, I count that a success!!!

Pretty Little Details

Pretty Little Details! This 1930's detailed 5 drawer Mahoghany dresser was given a 'new' shabby chic look! After repairing chipped veneer, gluing and clamping drawer joints and block readjustment, she was ready for finish! This piece was coated with 3 coats of Shellac to prevent tannin bleedthrough and painted with one coat of AS Old Ochre chalk paint, followed by 2 coats of AS Pure White chalk paint. Sealed with clear and white wax. GF Pitch Black glaze used on details. Distressed with 220 grit snading pad.

Chippy Side Table

This chippy side table was almost doomed to a dark future in a dump, the door wouldn't stay closed and it had a horrendous, outdated finish.

I sanded the top to uncover a gorgeous solid wood. Which would have been a crime to paint over! So I oiled the top with Watco Danish Oil and let sit for a few days until I decided what I wanted to do with the legs. I had started sanding the legs down but luckily had run out of steam during the process and ended up just being a rough scratch.

My laziness turned out to be beneficial when I decided to go with something on the shabby side and use Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint in Farmhouse White. After 2 coats I took the flat end of a plastic pry tool and chipped off the loose paint.The less pourous surfaces chipped beautifully! I decided to do an additional coat of the danish oil to deepen the top and then sealed the top with Minwax Oil Based Poly in Semi- Gloss to achieve the sheen I was going. I then used General finishes Tough Coat in Satin for the base to seal the chippiness.

I love the way it turned out, what do you think?

Green with Envy Sideboard

This very old and heavy oak sideboard was a bit of a challenge. Anyway, I'm not one to shy away from a challenge so I set to work. Entirely stained in some hideous black colour, I put in a lot of work just to get back to the original oak finish on the top.

Originally, I applied a couple of base coats of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint (ASCP) in Barcelona Orange - bear with me - before applying ASCP Olive over the top (leaving the Barcelona Orange in the recessed carvings and in a few other choice spots). Hmmm, I liked it but I didn't love it so I put my thinking cap on. I know, I thought, let's add some ASCP Honfleur to the bottom part of the sideboard and then do a sort of ombre into the ASCP Olive; yep, getting better.

Now I don't know if you are aware but we've been having a bit of a heatwave here in the UK and so I decided - on the hottest day of the year so far - that I would add some more ASCP Barcelona Orange. I think may brain may have melted a bit to even contemplate this as my paint was drying even before I could get in onto the side board and, yep you guessed it, I ruined it. Hot, sweaty and miffed I returned home to contemplate my epic fail.

Not to be defeated, the next day I sanded the bottom part of the sideboard until it looked really chippy and then I dry-brushed ASCP Country Grey in random areas. I was on a roll now and finished up with Fusion's Antique Glaze before applying (once dry) lashings of ASCP Clear and then Dark waxes.

Now to the sanded back solid oak top. I used two coats of General Finishes Wood Stain in Espresso. I wanted a pretty distressed top so I sanded a lot of the stain off again and then sealed with ASCP Clear Wax.

Phew. I was finally happy. The bonus for me was when a client came to collect a commission piece, they fell in love with this and bought it on the spot. Yay!

Beeswax Shabby Chic Coffee Table

This vintage wood coffee table is now such a big hit after her makeover that a mom and daughter take turns with it in their homes.

After cleaning this all wood table and sanding, it was painted with Wise Owl Beeswax and a quick coat of Tree House Studios Acrylic Matte Spray was applied. It was then distressed and Wise Owl Black Walnut Glaze was added paying close attention to all the details and wiped back with baby wipes. Two coats of GF HPTC in Flat was then applied. For some reason, I think Mom may end up winning this battle in the long run.

The Little Yellow Desk

What a fun little desk to have in your room! Painted in a chippy yellow with stained legs, this upcycled desk has a new life. It once was a sewing desk, but that all changed soon after I found her. We took off her top, removed the part where the sewing machine used to sit, and then reattched the part of the top that used to open and close. Then we found an adorable little chair to go with her! What a match.
