Small Curly Maple Wood Bowl

This maple salad bowl is 4" in diameter and 2" tall. I made this bowl out of some local wood that was destined to be turned into firewood. This bowl has a lot of interesting character including curly figure.

The finishing process for this bowl started at the lathe with sanding. I sanded with and electric power sander from 120 grit to 320 grit. Next, I lightly raised the grain with water, and set the bowl to dry. After drying, I contenuied the sanding process going from 320 grit through 600 grit. Next, I took the bowl out of the chuck and turned it around into a jam chuck to turn of the foot. After turning and sanding the foot I signed the bowl with a woodburning tool. Finally, I took the bowl out of the lathe and applied a few coats of all natural walnut oil for a food safe finish. To apply the finish I first coated the whole surface libraly and spreaded it to cover the whole bowl. I conteniued to apply walnut oil in this manner untill the bowl would not soak up anymore.

This is my usual finishing process for salad bowls. This product makes an all natural food safe finish which really ecsentuates the bowls to natural beauty, while still allowing the bowl to be used to years and years.

This is a Ambrosia Maple bowl and is probably one of my favorite woods to work with. I love the coloring In this bowl.

Magnolia Reborn

A wonderful 150-year-old deep-South Magnolia tree was blown to the ground in a heavy storm. It laid on the ground for quite some time and had begun to show the signs of decay when parts of it were recovered to be saved and reborn in another form. The early stages of decay and rot are evidenced by the beautiful streaks of black color through the wood. The form was shaped with very thin walls, which results in a delightful tactile experience when the viewer picks up the piece from the table. Life’s experiences teach us that a relatively large piece of wood should have a certain weight, and the viewer is very surprised when they discover that the piece is actually very much lighter than they expected. Wood that was on the ground rotting has been reborn into a new life. The finish is General Finishes Wood Turners Finish and the completed bowl is 13" x 5".

Ambrosia Maple Vessel

The piece consists of ambrosia maple body with african blackwood and yellowheart rings on the foot and lip. These were added to gine the piece additional hight. It is finished with waterbased Wood Turners Finish.

Black maple -- rescued from local burn pile turned down 6 months ago and returned on lathe crotch bowl turned down and sanded from 150grit to 3000grit mineral oil and butcher block conditioner. Started turning a year and 2 months ago

Bubinga pedestal bowl

A pedestal bowl turned from a bubinga wood blank. A faceplate was fitted to the top and then fittted to the lathe. A dovetail chucking point was turned into the base. The piece was then rotated and held by the chucking point and turned to shape the sanded from 40 to 120 grit and the sanding sealer applied then sanded up to 1200 and finished with 2 coats of natural beeswax with a light sanding between coats.

This is a large mesquite bowl with bisbee blue turquoise and morenci copper inlay . It measures 11 3/4 inches across and 8 inches tall I started with the bowl being sanded to 400 grit . Then I wiped it down with a tack rag . Once it is dust free , I sprayed a thin coat of deft sanding sealer to the bowl . It dryed in 30 min . I sanded with 400 grit between coats Until the desired smoothness is aquired . Then it is wiped with a tack rag . I then spray a coat of deft gloss lacquer over the sanding sealer . I apply 4 coats as a minimum of coats and more as needed. Then you have a beautiful gloss finish .

Big Leaf Maple Burl Bowl

I filled the rather large voids with a mixture of epoxy and French Roast coffee grounds. The whole project was sanded to 600 grit before applying 3 coats of EnduroVar, while still on the lathe. I lightly sanded with 600 grit paper after each coat, and ended by using the 3 step Beall buffing system (tripoli, white diamond, and carnauba wax).

Double Beaded Cherry Bowl

This is a bowl that was turned from Local Florida Cherry. The Florida cherry has some of the most beautiful color and grain you will find and as it ages it gets even more patina and color. This wood is so smooth and feels great in you hands that you won't want to put it down. All of the wood that I use is recycled wood that was headed for my local landfill or a fireplace. Even my scraps are used by a friend to smoke BBQ. Size is around 12"dia x 8" deep x 3/16"Thk.

Beaded Florida Cherry Bowl

This a bowl turned from Florida cherry with the exterior covered in beads top to bottom. The beads add some eye appeal and feel good when you pick up with you hands. The Florida cherry has some of the most beautiful color and grain you will find and as it ages it gets even more patina and color. All of the wood that I use is recycled wood that was headed for my local landfill or fireplace. Even my scraps are used by a friend to smoke BBQ. Size is aprox 10" dia. x 8" tall and 3/16" thick.
