This red oak bowl is 10" in diameter and 4" tall. I made this bowl out of some local wood that was destined to be turned into firewood. This bowl has a lot of interesting character and a lot of color.

The finishing process for this bowl started at the lathe with sanding. I sanded with and electric power sander from 120 grit to 320 grit. Next, I lightly raised the grain with water, and set the bowl to dry. After drying, I contenuied the sanding process going from 320 grit through 600 grit. Next, I took the bowl out of the chuck and turned it around into a jam chuck to turn of the foot. After turning and sanding the foot I signed the bowl with a woodburning tool. Finally, I took the bowl out of the lathe and applied a few coats of all natural walnut oil for a food safe finish. To apply the finish I first coated the whole surface libraly and spreaded it to cover the whole bowl. I conteniued to apply walnut oil in this manner untill the bowl would not soak up anymore.

This is my usual finishing process for salad bowls. This product makes an all natural food safe finish which really ecsentuates the bowls to natural beauty, while still allowing the bowl to be used to years and years.

The yew cut and the a section of bark removed from the middle to allow a faceplate screwed to the top. It was then fitted to the lathe and a base was turned and a reverse chucking point fitted. The piece was then rotated and fitted to the chuck. The top was then turned to create a natural edge bowl. It was then sanded to 300 grit and then sanding sealer applied. Then sanded up to 1200 grit and finished with two coats of naural beeswax.

This is a Witch Elm Burl Natural Edge. I enjoy working with natural edge bowls they can be hard on the knuckles but the result is well worth it.

This project held many "firsts" for me. It was the first turning after I moved about 2 years ago and the first natural edge piece I've made. It's hard to beat the amazing colors and forms that come from nature which is why I chose to leave the natural edge and let the wood speak for itself.

Red Mallee winged bowl

This winged bowl was turned from an Australian Red Mallee burl cap. It measures 9" in maximal diameter and 1.5" deep. The wings are about 1/8" thick. It is finished with Danish oil which is then buffed to give it a soft sheen.

This is a piece of Russian olive that had some burl on it, I turned it to the finish thickness, sanded to 240, I then used a torch to bring out the grain rings. I then finish sanding through the rest of the grits. Finish is watco danish oil, with three stage buff size is 10" x 5.750"

This is a Pistachio bowl with black epoxy inlay . The finish used on this piece is deft sanding sealer and deft lacquer. I sanded between coats with 400 grit . It has 2 coats of sanding sealer and 4 coats of lacquer. I'm pleased with the wood colors and contrast .
