Reborn as Bronze

Reborn as Bronze is a piece of Camphor wood that has been turned into a hollow form. The surface was then embellished with a bronze paint and treated with a patina process resulting in an aged effect. The finished piece is 5" x 5".

The hollow form is made from Camphor wood, then decorated with a bronze paint which was then treated with a patina kit to end up with an aged effect.

Ribbon Burst

This plate is turned from poplar and the rim carved and painted with the intent of being reminiscent of a wood cut print. The textured surface is painted with acrylics and the bowl portion painted with flat black spray paint. The back is left natural and finished with Danish oil which has been buffed to give it a soft sheen.

Platonic Ocean

This piece is a turned Platonic solid, a dodecahedron. A dodecahedron has 12 pentagonal faces, 20 vertices and 30 edges. The form was totally accomplished on the lathe with many axes of turning to complete the internal spherical hollow and a matching external sphere. The external sphere was then turned on 6 axes with 12 fixings to accomplish the final form. The pentagonal faces reminded me of the pentagonal symmetry of starfish. I carved a different starfish on each face, inspired by nature and given a background reminiscent of the ocean.

Once the carving was completed the exterior was dyed with india Ink then hand painted with acyrlics using a dry brush technique. The interior was gilded with 23 K gold leaf.

While the starfish may appear brilliant in color, I used real starfish as the model for each one and the colors are pretty true to the actual biological form.

A final light coat of Krylon Fixatif was applied to protect the surface paint.

Floral Symmetry

This is one of the pieces I completed in my Platonic solids series. This is a turned icosahedron which has 20 identical equilateral faces and 12 vertexes. The piece was first turned as a box with an interior spherical hollow, then glued together and an exterior sphere turned as a starting point for the icosahedron. It was then turned on 20 axes to create the 20 equilateral triangular faces.

Once the turning was complete, the faces were then carved, pierced and painted to come to the completed form. There are 12 flowers with 5 petals carved out of the 12 vertices and 20 negative space 3 petal flowers pierced in the centers of each face. If you look at the leaf background, these are rough hexagonal shapes. So this is a highly symmetrical object, that I tried to make appear less so by the freehand carving of the leaf background and the petals of each form

The finish/color started with an interior airbrushed painted surface. The exterior was first dyed black with indigo ink, then hand painted with acrylics using the dry brush technique. A light coat of Krylon Fixatif was applied to give the final surface some protection.

When the original red paint wore off my IKEA chairs I decided to repaint them with bright green color that matches our “hacienda style” living room. But my kids, who helped me, initially did such a bad job that I had to sand the chairs to prepare the surface for another round of painting. And they looked quite interesting, so I’ve decided to add decorative flowers and leave them as they were. I used the gold leaf and protected the siting surface with GF Polyurethane Top Coat.

Acoma Strong is made from Bradford pear with the basket illusion technique applied, I chose this name because the acoma pattern is so prominent and seemed fitting. I had so much fun with this piece especially the photos, I know this shot doesn't show the form very good but I just feel in love with this shot, it gives it the real basket feel to it, it is 6.750"x6" and a total of 10,944 squares . Now I'm of to my next one :)

Florida Cherry Bowl Ebonized

This bowl was turned from Florida Cherry. I then finished the interior with Gel Topcoat. The exterior was given a basketweave texture with pyrography(woodburning) and some additional texture was done with a power carver. The exterior was then ebonized black and given a matte topcoat. The size is 10" Dia. x 4" tall.

Bradford Pear Trivet with Dragonflies

I started the project by turning a trivet out of spalted bradford pear. I then drew the design and hand cut locally made glass for the design of the dragonfly. I also made a stand for the trivet out of the Spalted Bradford Pear. The trivet is 8" in diameter by 1/2" thick.

Sycamore Vessel with Fish

This is a small vessel that was turned from sycamore. After turning I then etched the entire surface with fish and scales. I then used a thinned acrylic white on the exterior. I finished with the wipe on Gel Topcoat-Satin the size is 5" wide by 4" tall.

Mahogany vase with Dragonflies

I have a vase that was turned from Mahogany. The exterior is covered in dragonflies that were drawn and then etched on the surface. I then went over the entire surface with a thinned Basil green milk paint. The interior was finished with Arm-R-Seal. the vase is 6 1/2" tall and 6" wide.
