This is a Maple Burl vessel with carved feet. People that have seen this piece have said they see a face on the one side of the vessel.

New Direction

“New Direction” is a piece of Mesquite wood that came from a dead tree on the King Ranch in southern Texas. The surface was dirty, rotted and perforated with worm and insect tunnels. When the bad surface wood was cut away, beautiful wood was exposed. In effect, the wood was reborn. The Mesquite was turned into a hollow form, and then it was cut apart with a top and bottom and several rings. The rings were carved and shaped, and then bleached. The pieces were put back together and the top and bottom were hand rubbed with an oil finish. The finished piece stands 15" x 6". The reborn wood continues the cycle of life with new purpose.

Products Used

The vessel is made from Mesquite wood. Parts of it were bleached and the rest was finished with hand-rubbed finishing oil.

This ant-eaten Walnut Root Burl was thinly turned and hand carved to render off-center "swept" effect. The vessel, 11"h X 19"w was finished with four coates of Helmsman high gloss urethane finish.

Turned, textured and hand scalloped Maple bowl, 8"h X 8"w. Exterior surface textured to present leatherized appearence with black finish (Krylon satin paint) - Three coates of high gloss Helmsman Spar Urethane used on interior surface.

Turned and hand carved scalloped edge bowl, 9"h X 11"w from Golden Mahogany. Carving involved double turned layers of bowl and carving that incorporated both edges in one final edge.

This is a Mulberry bowl with a hand carved rim, had a lot of fun finishing this bowl. It is finished with sanding sealer and GF salad bowl finish.

GinkgAu measures 8" in diameter and 2" thick. The surface is carved with ginkgo leaves which intentionally all flow out of the field of view. The surface is painted with acrylics using the dry brush technique and the "bowl" is covered in gold leaf. The name references the ginkgo leaf and Au which is the chemical symbol for gold.
