Crafted using a single board of hard maple, this table was engraved with a pattern inspired by William Morris and digitally altered. It was then refined with dental picks and filled with General Finished Milk Paint. It was then finished with several coats of hand rubbed polyurethane. This table uses new construction with classical craft.

Boeing Crate Dinner Table

The wood used for this project began in Seattle Washington two years ago at a place called Ballard Re-use. There were stacks of this beautiful butcher block style wood that had my name written all over them. It was 16" wide and roughly 1 1/2" thick. I had to ask of course where they came from. The employee said that they came from Boeing airplane crates used to carry heavy parts used on their aircraft. The crates were also constructed with 4x4 posts made with a beautiful rare (to me) wood that I am unsure of. I purchased enough for the top, base and an additional bench I still need to make. I used West Systems epoxy to fill in the cracks, voids, and bolt holes in the top. After flattening the top, it's final thickness is 1 1/4". This entire table was made from the Boeing pallet/crate, except the breadboard ends and the walnut strips on the sides. Then the finishing process took place. I used Arm-r-seal semi gloss to add protection while maintaining that crisp wood look. In total, I applied six coats on the top, and three coats on the base. Once the finish dried, I attached the top using 3" lag bolts.

Black Walnut Table Custom turned legs

Black Walnut Dining table with chairs. To finish the walnut I started with a wipe on poly blend (oil based), after a full cure I used two coats of amber shellac to seal in the oil based finish, then finished up with four coats of General Finishes Clear Poly.

Shadowbox Coffee Table

An Air Force veteran contacted me for a coffee table that could display memorabilia from his Air Force career. Being an Air Force Academy graduate he also wanted his 1979 class crest prominently displayed. A collaboration began that resulted in the table you see here.

Each side of the table houses a shallow drawer under glass to display items. The center panel’s class crest is done in hand-cut marquetry within a border of aluminum inlay. The table is made of walnut. The drawer bottoms reflect the Academy’s terrazzo pattern using ash burl and holly.

The finishing recipe included a faint orange water-based aniline dye stain for the walnut to restore the color lost through kiln drying. This was followed by GF Seal-a-Cell, Gloss Arm-R-Seal (to build a foundation), and final coats of Satin Arm-R-Seal. Sanding and surface prep occurred between coats. A hand-rubbed paste wax coat completed the finish.

The detailed marquetry work for this project posed an enjoyable challenge. The table now resides at its home in Colorado.

The Rubow Table

Another custom table built using old school mortise and tenon techniques. The design was to fit 4 chairs on either side between the X base legs with a white base and custom color blend top. A family of 6 with 4 young kids we decided to "child proof" the edges by hand chiseling them to appear distressed. The top showing distressing we decided to add a base of antique oak, sand, then a blend up 5 parts Natural Stain with .5 part weathered for overall pickling age tone and then high performance satin top coat. For the base we reduced Snow White and sprayed several coats to give it a candy shell look that will hold up to a growing family’s gatherings. This table has been one of the most popular for us and comes in a variety of color combos thanks to all the options we are allotted with General Finishes.

The Delaney Table

Customized reclaimed white oak barn wood table using beams and joists, and old school joinery. Our original design was to save as much of the natural patina and character of the wood available to form a custom dining table for a local designer. After the designer decided against the table design we moved forward with our design with the intention of using for a personal table. It wasn’t long before we were approached by Boston MA residents The Delaneys and without hesitation purchased the table before we could finish it. We spent alot of time on details which includes 3 butterfly joints on the main cross beam and a 320 fine finish over the existing character. There isnt a single screw or nail in this build and held up to shipping to Boston from Sacramento by truck without a single issue. Its one of our favorites and was later contacted by the designer how she regrets not buying it when she had the chance. We couldn’t have achieved the finish we wanted without General Finishes Antique Oak Stain and High Performance Satin Top coat.

Coaster Table

This project is a combination of a tile top table and a portable coaster. The tile was custom made at a local pottery shop. The table was inspired by the splay-legged table by Garrett Hack. The top and aprons are natural cherry. The legs are stained cherry. General Finishes products were used to complete the project. The wood conditioner and stain were straightforward and easy to use. For the topcoat I found applying the finish with a foam brush and wiping the excess off with a cloth rag produced the best result. I applied four coats, buffing with steel wool between coats.

The Nick & Kate

My son got married July 1st 2017. As a wedding gift, he said, Mom, I want a table like this....and sends me a photo. My husband, the incredible hardworking contractor / carpenter / architect he is, figured up the material in his head, drew a quick sketch and of to our local Amish saw mill we went. We purchased 40 board feet of 1.5" thick Ash wood for the top. It was incredible. Rough sawn and just delicious with marks. Together we assembled the entire table and a matching bench in one day. After sanding and cleaning I used three different colors of General Finishes stain, applying in several alternating layers. I topped it off with several layers of GF Flat Out Flat. I used Antique White on the bottom. It is absolutely stunning. I signed and dated the underside of the table and the bench so when I am long gone, we will be remembered. This particular color combination of this custom stain and paint was dubbed "The Nick & Kate" after my son and his beautiful bride, so customers can choose this by name.
